What Is Welding?

Welding is a process in which two or more parts are fused by pressure or heat. This welding work is usually done on metals or thermoplastics and sometimes wood. Here is a glimpse of the welding work:-

1.Metals:

Welding is different from soldering or brazing. Welding melts the base material, and filler material is fused into it. Pressure and heat are both used to join two metals.

2. Wood:

Wood is typically a hard one to join. For this, a process of linear friction is used to produce heat. This process welds the wood, and further, it is attached with adhesive or nails.

3. Plastics:

Plastics are also fused with heat or pressure. In welding tech schools, combining plastics is explicitly taught due to its cooling process. However, plastic needs proper care and an excellent relaxed time for a more robust fuse.

Types Of Welding

1. Arc:

The arc welding process is famous in the aerospace, oil, and power industries. The method includes filler material used in stainless steel, aluminum, cobalt, and copper alloys.

This category has several standard manual, semi-automatic, and automatic processes. Among them are metal inert gas welding (MIG), stick welding, tungsten inert gas welding (TIG), also known as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas welding, plasma arc welding, and much more.

2. Friction:

Friction welding is done with the help of linear friction heat. As a result of this heat, wood, steel, and aluminum are fused. This heat softens the material, and it gets fused after cooling. As a result, friction welding doesn’t require using filler metals, flux, or shielding gas.

Aerospace applications use friction processes to join otherwise non-weldable lightweight aluminum alloys. Friction processes are used throughout the industry and explored for bonding wood without adhesives or nails.

3. Resistance:

Fast processes like this are commonly used in the automotive industry. In terms of resistance spot welding, it can be divided into two types: resistance seam welding and resistance spot welding.

The spot welding process involves applying heat to a small area while clamping the workpieces together between two electrodes. The seam welding process is similar to spot welding, except that rotating wheels replace the electrodes to achieve a continuous, leak-free bond.

4. Electron Beam:

This kind of welding uses an electron’s high velocity for fusing metals. The kinetic energy produces heat which melts and joins. EBW is performed in a chamber to reduce the dissipation of electrons. It is commonly used in the aerospace and nuclear industries.

5. Laser:

This welding process is used to join thermoplastics or metal pieces using a laser to produce a concentrated heat ideal for barrow, deep welds, and high joining rates. It’s easy to automate, and its high welding speed makes it ideal for high-volume applications, such as automotive welding.

Equipements For Safe Welding

Equipment welding can be tricky. As a welder or cutting professional, safety is of utmost importance. The minimum safety requirements are hoods, aprons, sleeves, and gaiters to protect the wearer’s head and feet.

However, there are certain precautions we can take to prevent hazards. It may include:

  • Clothes: 
  • Long sleeve jackets
  • Pants
  • Welding caps
  • Aprons
  • Gloves.

Try wearing cotton or leather items of clothing. These are one of the best fabrics for welding protection. Cotton is much more breathable and inexpensive. Although, leather is more breathable and affordable. But, it is the best one. It doesn’t let our body heat interface during welding.

Equipment welding

  • Head protection:

Try wearing caps and helmets while welding. It will take care of your head and eyes. But you never know what can happen. That is why it is good to take precautions.

  • Foot and leg protection:

Foot and leg protection is also necessary. It not only protects you from cuts and bruises but also from heat and burns.

Wearing long pants and shoes will protect you from everything mentioned above.

  • Respirators and masks:

Inhaling fumes can is very harmful to us. That is why getting one respirator with a filter can be excellent protection.

  • Eye protection:

Purchasing welding protection goggles can be a game changer. It will protect your eyes from all the heat fumes and little particles flying while welding.
